On Conexión, Carina Linares speaks with Dr. Omi Salas-SantaCruz and Mar Romero about the upcoming AJAAS (The Association for Jotería Arts, Activism, and Scholarship) conference at the University of Utah. The national gathering brings together queer and trans Latinx artists, scholars, and community members.
Dr. Salas-SantaCruz explains the meaning behind jotería: “It’s a community-rooted way of naming queer and trans Latinx lives, experiences, creativity, politics, and knowledge.” The term reclaims language that once carried stigma. “The term itself has a negative connotation… and for us it’s about transforming it."
By adding “-ería,” it also becomes a field of study. “The same way they have queer theory, we have our own knowledge systems… what we create despite everything else.”
They emphasized safety and inclusion, noting the conference is open to all: “artists, activists, students, families, and allies," creating space to learn, celebrate, and build community.

Este encuentro nacional reúne a "artistas, académicxs y personas de la comunidad queer y trans latinxs".
Dr. Salas-SantaCruz explica el significado de jotería: “Es una forma comunitaria de nombrar las vidas, experiencias, creatividad, política y conocimientos de las personas queer y trans latinxs”. El término resignifica un lenguaje que antes tenía una carga negativa. “El término en sí tiene una connotación negativa… y para nosotrxs se trata de transformarlo.”
Al añadir “-ería”, también se convierte en un campo de estudio. “De la misma manera que existe la teoría queer, nosotrxs tenemos nuestros propios sistemas de conocimiento… lo que creamos a pesar de todo”.
También enfatizan la seguridad y la inclusión, destacando que la conferencia está abierta a todxs: “artistas, activistas, estudiantes, familias y aliadxs”, creando un espacio para aprender, celebrar y construir comunidad”.
