In this episode of Conexión, Edgar Zúñiga welcomes Dustin White from Salt Lake City’s Department of Public Utilities to explain the city’s lead and copper program.

White says, “It’s a federally mandated program … we need to identify all service line materials … we want to find all lead pipes and get them replaced by the year 2037.”

Discussing health risks, White notes, “Lead can affect everyone, but some groups are more at risk, particularly unborn children … and kids under six. Lead exposure can affect IQ … blood, kidneys, and nervous system.” He adds, “There are no safe levels of lead exposure.”

White says, “We provide a pitcher-style filter certified to remove lead … and if you have a lead service line … we’ll schedule to have it replaced.” He adds, “We provide all these services at no cost to the customer.”
