On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Edgar Zúñiga sat down with Pamela McCall, host of All Things Considered at sister station KUER. McCall lived and worked in New York City, reporting from Ground Zero for CBS News Radio during the attacks and aftermath.
"I knew by the time I was in a taxi on the West Side Highway, only emergency vehicles and a taxi, that this was very bad. The second tower was hit as I was traveling down there."
McCall narrates her recollections of that fateful day and talks about her reporting that followed, including going underground as FEMA searched for possible survivors in the rubble.
Twenty-five years later, McCall says what stays with her is not only the sorrow, but also the humanity and solidarity she witnessed.
"The West Side Highway was lined with well-wishers and signs saying, 'You are heroes.' They were crying. I was crying. It was an incredible moment, but such support that the best of humanity came out alongside the worst."

En el vigésimo quinto aniversario de los atentados del 11 de septiembre, Edgar Zúñiga conversó con Pamela McCall, presentadora de All Things Considered en nuestra emisora hermana KUER. McCall vivía y trabajaba en la ciudad de Nueva York y cubrió los atentados y sus secuelas desde la Zona Cero para CBS News Radio.
"Cuando iba en un taxi por la West Side Highway y vi que solo había vehículos de emergencia y el taxi en el que viajaba, supe que aquello era muy grave. La segunda torre fue impactada mientras me dirigía hacia allí".
McCall recuerda con extraordinaria nitidez lo que vio y escuchó aquel día fatídico. También habla sobre la cobertura que realizó posteriormente, incluso bajo tierra, mientras equipos de FEMA buscaban posibles sobrevivientes entre los escombros.
Veinticinco años después, McCall no solo conserva el dolor, sino también las muestras de humanidad y solidaridad que presenció en esa misma vía.
"La West Side Highway estaba llena de personas que mostraban su apoyo y sostenían carteles que decían: 'Ustedes son héroes'. Ellos lloraban. Yo lloraba. Fue un momento increíble. Hubo tanto apoyo que lo mejor de la humanidad salió a relucir junto a lo peor".
