Punto de Encuentro host Pablo Tellechea welcomed Avanza 88.3 Program Director Edgar Zúñiga to discuss Avanza's mission, the role of bilingual public media and the future of Utah's Latino community.
Pablo highlighted the station's growth since 2024, telling Edgar, “In these two years, Avanza has experienced tremendous, exponential growth.”
Edgar thanked listeners for their support, saying, "Thank you to the community that continues to move forward with us... This week marks my second anniversary and the support we've received from community members has been incredible." He added that the University of Utah and sister stations PBS Utah and KUER launched Avanza, "Not just a radio station, but as a community service."
When asked what inspired his passion for serving the community, Edgar reflected on growing up in Salt Lake City as the son of Colombian immigrants. "I've seen how Utah's Latino community has grown, but we still need more spaces where we can come together and have meaningful conversations... this is my way of doing my part to help our community grow and flourish here in Utah.” Born in New York and raised in Utah, Edgar also shared that he is grateful to his parents for teaching him to "be proud of my roots... while also loving this country that welcomed us."
Edgar underscored why this work matters: "Utah's future is tied to the success of the Latino community."
A dos años de Avanza, Edgar Zúñiga reflexiona sobre la misión de Avanza
Al cumplirse dos años de Avanza, el director de programación Edgar Zúñiga conversó con el presentador Pablo Tellechea en Punto de Encuentro sobre el papel de la radio pública y la importancia de construir espacios para el diálogo y el pensamiento crítico en Utah.
Durante la entrevista, Tellechea destacó el crecimiento de la emisora al afirmar: “Desde dos años que se abrió la puerta de Avanza, que tú has estado al frente, ha tenido un crecimiento exponencial, tremendo Avanza”.
Edgar agradeció el respaldo de la audiencia y de la comunidad: “Gracias a la comunidad que está avanzando con nosotros... cumplo dos años esta semana y es increíble el apoyo que hemos recibido de miembros de la comunidad.” Edgar agregó que “esto no es solamente una emisora o estación de radio, es un servicio comunitario”.
Pablo le preguntó a Edgar de dónde nació la pasión por la comunidad. “Yo crecí aquí en Salt Lake City... he visto cómo la comunidad latina ha crecido, pero aún necesitamos más espacios donde podamos dialogar... es mi forma de poner nuestro granito de arena para que nuestra comunidad crezca y florezca aquí en Utah”. También agregó que se siente agradecido con sus padres por hacerlo “sentirme orgulloso de mis raíces… también amar este país que nos ha recibido”.
Edgar subrayó qué ese trabajo es sumamente importante para el futuro del estado: “El futuro de Utah está vinculado con el éxito de la comunidad latina hispana”.
