A Community With Memory and Purpose: Record Scholarships Highlight SOMOS Foundation’s Impact in Utah

A wonderful gala evening marked the presentation of the 2026 Utah SOMOS Foundation Scholarships. The event not only celebrated the talent and hard work of our youth, but also reached a historic record number of students receiving scholarships. This achievement was made possible through the foundation’s volunteer efforts and the support of donors and sponsors committed to education. Companies such as Rancho Markets and organizations like the University of Utah, home to Avanza 88.3, KUUB, helped make this important step forward possible for our community.

Over the years, SOMOS Foundation has established itself as a real bridge to higher education for Hispanic students in Utah, transforming community support into concrete opportunities for growth and leadership. As the African proverb says, “it takes a village to raise a child.” That spirit was reflected throughout the gala: volunteers, families, and donors united so that financial barriers do not limit the dreams of our young people.

As an independent journalist and host at Avanza 88.3, Utah’s first bilingual radio station created by PBS Utah and KUER — NPR Utah, it was an honor to be present in support of causes like this that strengthen our community.

Congratulations to all the scholarship recipients!
