This week on La Mesa, Edgar Zúñiga and Carina Linares open with Utah's Data Center debate and the public protest that led to developers pulling the application for now, although they plan to refile and move forward. Utah Governor Spencer Cox has also said, "my own comments at a recent press conference did not meet the expectations I have for myself" regarding the debate. They also discuss concern in the immigrant community over the detention of 22-year-old Lisandro Pantaleon Pacheco, as well as some lighter topics: the upcoming World Cup and Shakira's massive 2.5 million-person concert in Rio de Janeiro.
Then, a deep dive segment focused on Utah's air quality, an environmental issue and growing concern that disproportionately affects Westside and POC communities in Utah. Edgar and Carina are joined by Luis Miranda with the Sierra Club Utah Chapter and Jake Erickson with HEAL Utah.
Finally, Carina is joined by Avanza's Elle Cowley to interview local Latino singer-songwriter Omni. He talks about his love of music, his style, and shares one of his latest songs, "Ice Cream Sandwiches," which is about love, heartbreak, and has a cool lo-fi vibe.
