Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall joined journalist Pablo Tellechea on Punto de Encuentro on Avanza 88.3 KUUB to discuss immigration, the role of immigrants and Latino residents in the city, and her broader priorities for Salt Lake City.
Punto de Encuentro airs primarily in Spanish. During the interview, Mendenhall responded in English, and listeners hear her answers followed by a Spanish interpretation.
Mendenhall said immigrants are fundamental to the country and the city. “Every single one of us… is here because of the determination and the sacrifice of immigrants. Full stop. That’s who America is,” she said. “This is the backbone of what America is. It’s the backbone of what Salt Lake City and the state of Utah are founded on.”
She also highlighted the role of Latino residents in the city’s economy and culture. “Our community members who are Latino, Latina, Latinx are an incredible part of our community… hardworking, culturally contributing, arts and culture building in Salt Lake City,” she said, adding that “we are not Salt Lake City without these residents living, working, contributing as members of our community.”
On immigration enforcement, the mayor said Salt Lake City police do not participate in federal immigration operations. “Our police department… do not participate in ICE enforcement efforts, period,” she said.
Mendenhall also discussed broader priorities affecting all residents, including housing, homelessness and public safety. She described homelessness as “a human crisis before it is an affordability or housing crisis.”
This interview was recorded last week, days before news reports that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had purchased a warehouse in Salt Lake City linked to immigration detention. Following those reports, Mayor Mendenhall's office issued a public statement addressing the development: “this kind of facility has no place in Salt Lake City.”

Mendenhall dijo que los inmigrantes son fundamentales tanto para el país como para la ciudad. “Cada uno de nosotros… está aquí gracias a la determinación y el sacrificio de los inmigrantes. Punto. Sobre la aplicación de las leyes migratorias, la alcaldesa dijo que la policía de Salt Lake City no participa en operativos federales de inmigración. “Nuestro departamento de policía… no participa en los esfuerzos de aplicación de ICE, punto”, afirmó.
Mendenhall también habló de prioridades más amplias que afectan a todos los residentes, como la vivienda, la falta de vivienda y la seguridad pública. Describió la falta de vivienda como “una crisis humana antes que una crisis de asequibilidad o de vivienda”.
Esta entrevista fue grabada la semana pasada, días antes de que surgieran reportes de que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de Estados Unidos había comprado una bodega en Salt Lake City vinculado a la detención de inmigrantes. Tras conocerse la noticia, la oficina de la alcaldesa Mendenhall emitió una declaración pública sobre el tema: “este tipo de instalación no tiene lugar en Salt Lake City”.
