Salt Lake City Councilmember Erika Carlsen joined Conexión on Avanza 88.3 to discuss her priorities for District 5 and the values that shaped her commitment to public service.

Carlsen described District 5 as “a really special, vibrant, diverse place in Salt Lake City,” highlighting landmarks like Liberty Park, Ninth and Ninth, Central Ninth, and the Ballpark neighborhood.

As she begins her term, Carlsen says housing affordability is one of her top priorities. “First and foremost is housing,” she said, emphasizing the need to “promote more opportunities for affordable home ownership for our residents.”

Carlsen also spoke about the influence of her family’s immigrant roots. “My grandparents came from Mexico,” she said, recalling how their Chicago neighborhood rallied together during difficult times.“That spirit,” she explained, helped instill the values she hopes to bring to City Hall, along with “the work ethic that immigrant and Latino communities bring to the community we all live in.”

Carlsen also said she plans to host a “city budget 101” session for residents, aimed at helping people better understand how city tax dollars are allocated and how residents can engage more directly with local government.
