Listeners in Utah will have a rare opportunity to experience Latin American classical music when Puerto Rican artists soprano Alba Franco-Cancel and pianist Jennifer Cancelado bring their project Duo Matices to Salt Lake City later this month.

The duo focuses on Latin American art song, a form of classical music that sets poetry to music for voice and piano. Their repertoire highlights songs primarily in Spanish, with some pieces in Portuguese and Indigenous languages. According to the artists, the goal of Duo Matices is to rediscover and share beautiful works that have historically been underperformed—even in Latin America.

Franco-Cancel and Cancelado first met while studying at the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico and later reunited professionally to explore the rich tradition of Latin American composers. Their performances blend classical traditions with familiar rhythms and influences from across the region, including sounds that echo boleros and other Latin musical styles.

The concert promises an intimate experience, with the artists sharing stories about the composers and the cultural context behind the music.

Duo Matices will perform Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alliance Theater at Trolley Square. More information is available at www.operacontempo.com.
