Avanza 88.3 Program Director Edgar Zúñiga spoke with Maribel Paulino from the American Red Cross on Conexión about the organization’s response to two recent crises—severe flooding in Salt Lake City and Tooele County and a Salt Lake City apartment fire—and how residents can prepare for future emergencies.
"Yes, we have had flooding in Salt Lake City and our Red Cross disaster volunteers are doing damage assessments and distributing cleanup kits to help residents recover," Paulino said. “These kits contain mops, brooms, buckets, bleach and other cleaning materials to help families."
Preparation, she emphasized, begins at home. "You can download our app on your phone and set up emergency alerts for your area." The Emergency by the Red Cross app "lets you activate your location, and get alerts and guidance for different types of emergencies."
Paulino also encouraged listeners to assemble a "comfort kit with medications, toothbrushes, important documents, water, and if you have children, a toy or book for comfort."
“There are four ways to help,” she added “Volunteer like me, donate financially, donate blood, or share our information.”
